How does a laser remove tattoos?

The moment you had your tattoo injected under your skin, your immune system regarded the ink as foreign material and began the very slow process of removing the large particles of pigment through lymph drainage. This explains why all tattoos fade naturally over time. In fact, in one or two hundred years your tattoo would be almost completely faded.

But who’s got that kind of time? That’s where the laser comes in. Basically, a laser speeds up this process by breaking up the tattoo ink into much smaller particles that can be cleared faster by your own immune system. The laser can do this because it is essentially a strong and focused beam of light that can pass through the upper layers of skin and reach the particles of pigment in your tattoo. The laser light heats (photothermic effect) and vibrates (photoacoustic effect) the ink so it breaks up into smaller particles.

What type of laser tattoo removal treatments do you offer?

The Medlite C6

The high energy, short pulse technology of the Medlite C6 allows tattoos to be treated with minimal risk of scarring and less discomfort than any other laser system. Its unique ability to output four different wavelengths allow this particular laser to treat more colors than any other.

The Medlite C6 laser is the only laser on the market that has the option of four different wavelengths (or colors), allowing it to selectively erase a whole spectrum of hues, including sky blue, green, orange, brown, etc. Most lasers are only capable of putting out one wavelength, which significantly limits their ability to treat colors selectively without causing scarring or pigment changes.

Although the Medlite C6 has been especially designed to treat sky blue and light green inks, these colors still require more treatments than other colors. Yellow, white, flesh tones, brown and fluorescent colors can also be very challenging. Because these inks may contain metals or plastics they usually require more treatments. In fact, there is a chance that some of these colors may even darken after laser treatment.

AlexTriVantage™

The new AlexTriVantage™laser removes tattoos of all colors gently, safely and comfortably – not only blues and greens, but the reds too. It also easily and effectively removes pigmented lesions such as age spots, sun spots, and freckles. Through the use of its “Laser-Pumped-Laser” technology, the AlexTriVantage™ can successfully fade or remove most tattoo colors.

Watch How Tattoo Removal Works

Does tattoo removal hurt?

The sensation of laser pulses has been described as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Fortunately, the procedure takes only a short amount of time. For smaller tattoos, the laser is turned on for only seconds, or tenths of seconds. Please ask about our topical anesthetic cream, cooling packs, and local anesthetic injections to reduce any discomfort.

“I see Dr. Zaiac and his staff for both cosmetic and medical dermatology. I can’t say enough good things about both sides of the practice and there aren’t words to express what a compassionate, talented, and sweet man Dr. Zaiac is.”

How badly will I scar?

Any laser or dermatologic procedure can potentially leave scars. However, the Medlite C6 laser system, which is specifically designed for the removal of tattoos, has a very low incidence of minor scarring.

Will the procedure cause pigment changes?

Laser procedures can bleach the skin leaving hypopigmentation, or they can darken the skin leaving hyperpigmentation. These changes are most often temporary and fade with time.

How many laser tattoo removal treatments will I need?

Most tattoos require anywhere from 5 to 15 treatments. The exact number of treatments will vary from tattoo to tattoo, and person to person. In general, light-skinned individuals and older tattoos containing darker inks and red inks will require fewer treatments (5-10), while dark-skinned patients and newer tattoos that contain yellow, white or fluorescent inks will require more treatments (10-15). Cover up tattoos will also require more treatments.

How often should the treatments be?

Healing usually takes only a few days, but time is needed for the immune system to pick up the broken down particles of ink. Therefore, the treatments are spaced six to eight weeks apart.

Are there any restrictions between treatments?

For the first 24 hours after the procedure, we ask that you rest, ice, elevate the tattoo, and stay out of the sun. The day after treatment, the tattoo and the surrounding area may be red and swollen, and an antibiotic ointment should be applied to the treated area. If you develop a scab or a blister, we ask that you not pick the scab or burst the blister. The reaction should heal over completely within the next few days. After that, we only ask that you keep the tattoo out of the sun by covering it with clothing or using sunblock.

Can I get a new tattoo over the treated area?

Yes. In fact, if the purpose of your tattoo removal is to clear your old tattoo so that you can get a new one over it, you should consult with your tattoo artist before and during the fading process. They may only require partial fading of the old tattoo before they add the new one, and thus, you may require less treatments.

Are there any patients who should not get this procedure?

Patients who are pregnant, have certain skin or medical disorders, seizures, or are taking certain medications should not have this procedure. However, each case is different. For this reason, we offer a complimentary initial consultation to assess your individual circumstances.

Is this treatment effective for dark-skinned patients?

Yes. The Medlite C6 is one of the only lasers on the market that can treat tattoos on dark-skinned individuals. We have had very good results, especially with the removal of dark ink.

Can you remove permanent makeup?

We can only remove eyebrows that were tattooed with standard tattoo ink. Most permanent makeup contains iron that will darken with laser and consequently should not be treated. If you are unable to identify or find out the type of ink that was used, we will be willing to try a test spot.
