What Is Dysport®?
Dysport is an FDA-approved neuromodulation medication. It is an injectable that temporarily inhibits wrinkle formation. Dysport is like Botox in that both are formulated with type A botulinum. Neuromodulators work by blocking the nerve receptors in treated muscles. As a result of treatment, the muscles cannot receive the necessary neurotransmitters that cause them to tighten and move as strongly as they would naturally. As a result, the overlying skin does not fold and wrinkle.
What Conditions Can Dysport® Treat?
As a neuromodulator that reduces muscle contraction activity, Dysport is a wonderful treatment option for dynamic wrinkles on the face and neck. Its initial FDA approval was for the correction of moderate to severe glabellar lines, also known as frown lines. However, since its development, it has expanded its cosmetic usage to include horizontal lines on the forehead and neck, as well.
How Are Dysport® Injections Performed?
Before recommending Dysport, a trained injectable provider conducts a thorough consultation. This ensures that you are a good candidate for this particular injectable. In many cases, treatment can occur right after the consultation. To improve this likelihood, it is advantageous to come to your visit with bare, clean skin. To make your treatment more comfortable, your provider may apply a topical numbing cream to the area. This can take 30 to 45 minutes to work, though, so many patients decline its use. To deliver injectables, the provider uses a very small needle and gentle technique. Even without an anesthetic, treatment is virtually painless. The treatment itself is over in less time than it would take for a numbing cream to work. The few injections that are needed usually take less than 20 minutes. After the treatment is complete, you may return to work and most other activities. Exceptions include anything that would involve touching the treatment area. It is important not to disturb the muscles that have been treated for 24 hours. By avoiding touching or massaging the face, you enable the injectable to settle properly.
How Long Will Dysport® Results Last?
You can expect to see the results of your Dysport injections roughly 48 to 72 hours after your appointment. Over this time frame, frown lines and other dynamic wrinkles soften. As they do, you may notice that you feel happier with your appearance and more confident overall, even when you're not wearing makeup. In all, it can take up to two weeks for the effects of Dysport treatment to reach their peak. Most patients see a noticeable improvement in five to seven days. The wrinkle-reducing effects of treatment last an average of three to four months.
Am I a Candidate for Dysport®?
If you are concerned about dynamic wrinkles like frown lines and you do not want to address them with surgery or invasive procedures, there is a high likelihood that you are a good candidate for Dysport. This treatment is approved for adults aged 18 and older, though most patients are at least 30 years old when they begin seeing the benefit of neuromodulator injections for these lines and creases. To have the best treatment experience, you must not be allergic to any of the ingredients in the product. If you have had Botox in the past and experienced an adverse reaction, you may have a similar reaction to Dysport. Your provider will be thorough in their review of your medical history to help rule out any potential allergy.
Dysport is an excellent treatment option for healthy adults who want to reduce the signs of aging without surgery and without downtime. Patients who receive Dysport receive natural-looking results without having to take time off work to recover. While there are a few minor activity restrictions in place for 24 hours, such as not massaging the face or engaging in strenuous physical activity, patients can go right back to most of their normal daily activities after their appointment. Dysport is also a wonderful alternative to Botox provided that you are not allergic to any ingredient in that drug, as has been mentioned.
Finally, to be a good candidate for Dysport, you must understand your provider's expected results. Injectable treatments are not intended for long-term effects. The wrinkles that were visible before Dysport treatment will, in time, return. Touch-ups can be performed as often as every 90 days to keep your face looking younger and more exuberant.
What Are The Side Effects Of Dysport®?
Potential side effects of Dysport include bruising, swelling, and redness. These are the most common effects and they usually resolve in 24 to 48 hours. To reduce the chances of bruising and redness, it is advisable to avoid drinking alcohol or taking blood-thinning medication or supplement 24 hours prior to your injections. That said, if you take a prescription blood-thinner, do NOT alter your dosage schedule without first talking to your prescribing physician. While rare, complications such as a drooping eyelid may occur. Typically, this side effect is attributed to poor injection technique performed by an untrained provider.
