The Ins and Outs of Dermal Fillers

Young Woman Having Fillers Injection For Forehead Lines

Dermal fillers is a non-surgical procedure that can smooth away wrinkles and reduce common signs of aging. When used carefully by a trained and experienced dermatologist, a balanced, subtle look without over-plumping any single feature can transform and take years off your facial appearance.

The Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used in anti-aging procedures that involve injecting certain substances under the skin to reduce wrinkles, improve the appearance of sagging skin, fill in hollow cheek areas, or enhance lips. They instantly plump frown lines, nasolabial folds, and lines around your eyes.

Hyaluronic acid and collagen are used as cosmetic fillers because both are natural substances found in your body. Hyaluronic acid sits between skin cells to help retain moisture. Collagen helps give your skin structure and strength. As you grow older, the levels of these substances decrease, making skin look drier, older, sunken, and less elastic.

When your doctor injects fillers made from hyaluronic acid or collagen just under the surface of your skin, they fill in lines and wrinkles and instantly provide a youthful fullness to your skin.

Who Makes a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

You may be a good candidate for this treatment if the following apply to you:

  • Non Smokers: Non-smokers tend to heal faster. Since the facial movements of smoking (squinting and sucking) worsen fine lines, the results won’t last as long for a smoker.
  • If you have wrinkles: Good candidates for dermal fillers will have moderate to severe folds or wrinkles or other problem areas that they do not want to correct with surgery (for example, under eye circles, sunken cheeks, etc.).

If you have a history of extreme allergies, you may not be a good candidate for certain dermal fillers, because they could cause an allergic reaction. Your doctor will review your medical and allergy history to see if there’s a dermal filler option for you that won’t lead to a reaction.

Dermal Fillers Types:

  • Sculptra: Sculptra® Aesthetic is a safe dermal filler that progressively and inconspicuously corrects facial lines and wrinkles and replaces lost collagen. The result is a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance that can last more than two years.
  • Restylane: Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid cosmetic filler, that is safe, natural, and brings back lost fullness and volume to the skin. This dermal filler corrects facial wrinkles, creases, and folds.

A dermal filler treatment is a relatively quick procedure. In most cases, you’ll see some positive results immediately that will improve over time. You can resume normal activities right after the procedure. You could experience some temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, mild pain and/or bruising.

Cosmetic Fillers and Sun Exposure

Sun exposure can affect the overall appearance of dermal fillers over time. You don’t have to stay out of the sun completely, but to protect your skin (and what’s under it) it’s best to take precautions. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation that sunlight contains can degrade the hyaluronic acid that’s found in many filler injectables.
