Botox vs. Dysport, vs. Xeomin

Everyday, we get questions from patients who are interested in anti-aging injectables as an alternative to plastic surgery procedures such as brow lifts and facelifts. At the Greater Miami Skin and Laser Center of Hallandale Beach and Miami Beach, we work with patients to help them choose injectable treatments that can help them reach their goals. A popular line of cosmetic injectables used in our office include neuromodulators such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. Dr. Martin Zaiac can help patients understand the difference between the three to make an educated decision in regards to which one is most appropriate for their unique situation.

What is a neuromodulator?

Neuromodulators are special proteins that are used to block communication between the nerves and muscle cells, restricting muscle movement. This, in turn, can remove the signs of aging on the skin, including wrinkles and folds on the face that contribute to an aged appearance. The three popular neuromodulators on the market today are Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin.

  • Botox is the most popular and well-known neuromodulator produced by Allergan, Inc. It is formulated with botulinum toxin type A and was approved by the FDA in 2002 for cosmetic use. In the past, and still today, it is also used for the treatment of other conditions including chronic migraines and excessive sweating.
  • Dysport provides similar results as Botox and was approved by the FDA in 2009. It is formulated in the same manner as Botox and requires more doses per injection because it is better used in larger surface areas such as the forehead.
  • Xeomin hit the American market in 2010 and received FDA approval in 2011. Xeomin has a different molecular makeup and is better for patients who have certain skin sensitivities.
