How to prevent sun damage this summer

At the Greater Miami Skin and Laser Center, we understand the problems associated with skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in patients within the United States, and continues to be of great concern. Our team of dermatologists are here to educate patients on the ways in which they can avoid the development of skin cancer and reduce their risks of developing it with time. In fact, many cases of skin cancer can be prevented with proper skincare protection.

How can I prevent sun damage this summer?

Florida is well-known for its sunny sky and great weather, but it is also a hotspot for individuals who may develop skin cancer. At the Greater Miami Skin and Laser Center, our team sees many patients who not only worry about skin cancer, but are unsure how to protect their skin and be sun safe. Below are several recommendations from our team regarding ways to reduce the risk of skin cancer:

  •         Wear a high SPF sunscreen every day. Even if you’re just walking from your car to your office every day, you should still protect your skin. Use a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection and a high SPF level. Apply it daily on exposed skin, including the face.
  •         Avoid the sun during the strongest times of the day. Between the times of 10am and 4pm, sun radiation is at its strongest. Avoid being outdoors during this time, but if you have to be, protect your skin and reapply sunblock as needed throughout the day.
  •         Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds are just as dangerous as sun exposure and should be avoided entirely. Instead, consider creams and lotions that darken the skin for a similar appearance.
  •         Schedule routine evaluations. All adult patients should visit a dermatologist annually for a skin cancer screening with a dermatologist. This allows the team to monitor the development of any changes on the skin that may be indicative of developing cancer.
